Interesting technique, not new, but you embraced it well in your work to make it your ’signature’ in this one. The colouring of the girl can be a bit more bold but quite well done, however I’m not convinced by
the background job as I feel it’s rather too simplistic and could use with more details. And yes you mentioned the perspective lines in your walkthrough, but the perspective for the grills in the foreground is not right.

Love the integration of the scans and the painted parts of this wall.
Nice consistent lighting throughout and well-thought background idea for the scans. I wish you did a tute on the buildings because the 3D-ness looks good, although I reckon they could use a bit more variety to make them look more believable.

There is a sense of depth which is good, however I would suggest having less details for the far objects, more details on the closer objects. The smoke/clouds look really good but they could look a bit more
consistent throughout.

I admire your boldness to push yourself to new limits and try different techniques and styles. Your painting skills have grown helluva lot and it shows in this piece.

The cityscape lights painting technique is quite effective here and good attention to details which I personally think is a key to success for all paintings. So yeah, great work on adding depth and differentiating distance and near objects, the lighting reflection on the tower and water effect.

I can only point out small things like the water should be much darker for that time of the day and the light reflections less prominent perhaps, as well as more definition on the dome.
Regardless, great work all around, well done!

Hoping this time more contest participants take the time to read the Monthly Subject, I shall continue with a theme going along the lines of our urban contest.
-New Perspective on Perspective tutorial is a great way to start reading about the technicality that is perspective, and it’s importance in creating pretty much anything. Have a read!

The Vanishing Point

A vanishing point is a point in a perspective drawing to which parallel lines appear to converge. The number and placement of the vanishing points determines which perspective technique is being used. -Source: Wikipedia
When structuring your city, buildings or any 3D/geometrical scene, you have to start by knowing where your vanishing point is, and from there draw directional lines. If you already have a stock, you can find it by overlapping straight lines and see where they converge like on the two examples on top. It’s a very visual thing and I highly suggest you click those thumbnails XD. Those directional lines will keep your proportions real and help you build a physically possible scene. The vanishing point can be placed outside the canvas like the first image shows, or in the middle or somewhere inside your wall. Having a focal point inside your canvas will enhance the perspective’s importance and drag the eye toward the point.

*Final comments: I can’t believe that after proposing blocks of information, details, links, proposed scans and gave ideas that less than half of the entries even respect the contest’s theme and restrictions. I’m pretty much disappointed, I wonder if you even bothered reading the monthly subjects. Only a handful of entries managed to really use dramatic lighting and apply it on their anime character and background. However I am happy of the participation of many to this contest. There is an interesting variety of ideas and wallpaper formats, haha.

Because most of you will probably opt for a scenic type of wallpaper for your contest entry, here are some more examples and tips mostly found in good photographs to accentuate the focus on the main subject. All photos are stocks taken from sxc.hu

The contrast of black and white can be used powerfully when handled correctly. In this rather classic nude pose, the woman’s body is directed towards the only thing that seems to matter to her; light. Here light is as importantly used as it’s alter-ego, shadow. Without the staggering play of light and shadow to make the human curves stand out, this photograph wouldn’t have looked so special.

Backlight is probably used more often in anime wallpapers because it’s easier to apply with a nice sunset stock. But it is still a lovely dramatic effect to have. It outlines nicely the main subject, damped in sunlight.

Filtering light through blinds, tree branches, or anything you fancy can give a very lovely midday effect applied on a subject. This photo should remind you of one of the painting examples right on top

Here are some interesting explanations about how to use light in a photograph. Some of the tips can be very useful to know when creating and planning a scene in your wallpaper.

As our current contest is focused on painting light, I thought i could add some more details on the subject. Here are a couple of examples from 19th century classic paintings by artists who were popular for their achievement in the said domain.

Lady writing a Letter with her Maid, Dutch Golden Age

Johannes Vermeer is known for his stunning work on the realism of light entering the room and touching the painting’s characters. His most popular painting may be Girl with a Pearl Earring, I felt as though this one was probably the best example because of it’s fierce contrast. The details are so fine and perfect you could feel as though the characters could come to life in an instant. **Places to stare at: the window’s border, the floor, the tablecloth.

Seascape in Moonlight & Fog Rising on the Mountain, German Romantism

Caspar David Firedrich was one crazy painter who always symbolised his scenic elements as Catholic signs, light being God himself.
And so his use of lighting has always a very “holy” feel to it. Notice how half of the mountain, representing human faith (usually the farthest in the horizon is paradise), is in the dark and the other is illuminated in divine light. Romantism was an artistic current aiming to overwhelm the viewer with emotions when looking at the painting, paintings from this period always achieve to leave us with a little something inside. Unfortunately I couln’t find any good resolution reproduction of those two paintings.

The Swing, French Impressionism

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a leading painter for the impressionist movement which focused on leaving an impression on the viewer after he/she left the painting. And so the brush strokes are not as acurate, and black is never used as a darkening colour for the shadows. This painting is a masterpiece regarding the effect of the light passing through the branches, creating a genuine athmosphere. This is candie’s favorite painting

Claude Monet is very famous for making series of paintings with the same subject at different time of day, studying the effect of sunlight on the environment. Here is a flash site with the whole series of the Rouen cathedral, great ressource.

Some tips by Mickyoko:
Select a main light source first then, when you’ve done that, then that is the only time you add the other ambience lighting like the backlight or reflection of a certain surface. In Photoshop make use of the layer and brush modes most likely the multiply, color dodge, overlay, screen, soft light… etc. I’ll leave the other exploring to you guys/gals. Hope this helps. Oh another hint… effective highlights are not white. So if it is not white then what should it be then? You find that out.

After the small participation success and great entries of our first contest,

lighting applied on objects and characters. Why? Because Winter is the
time of year where we have the less sunlight, and so our seasonal depression
remedy will be to work with the one thing nature is missing for now.
What must be featured in your wall:

-This time there is no specific element per se, but your work must have
dramatical lighting and important effect on it’s direct environment.
Now your wall must take advantage of
this same technique, and of course it will have to be painted.

end. To me the color scheme was kinda unusual, and I can’t say I hated it. Great

comments: I can truly see your hard work paied off in this wall. Working with
different stocks is not always easy and you did a good job blending them
together! the big branch would be the element to most re-work on in the future,
as it looks very wishy-washy because of the smudge abuse. Work more on the form

Why such low marks? Because I have a hard time giving perfect points wherever.
For example I felt like starrlite’s wall was the one most respecting the theme’s
restrictions but I only gave her 4.5 She still got the mention. Because yeah,
art is so subjective and perfection does not exist, it’s not easy to put numbers
on. Right? That’s also why I decided to give everyone a special mention. After
all every entry was pretty good. You can always come to me and complain, I’ll
take it. But there are little chances I’ll change my mind on the points enough
to alter the final results.

Allright so I was tired of waiting for new member applications so I decided to
start it right now, please mouth-to-ear it to your friends so we can have a load
of entries~

I made this pretty easy so everyone who wants to give a shot at painting can.

Summary:
This is our very first group activity! So I’m looking forward to your
participation. It also is a mean to recruit more mebers so please diffuse the
info.
You will be asked to make a wallpaper of any resolution you want, and provide a
walk-through of your work afterwards.

Theme will be: Japanese Ancient and
Feudal Eras, and you will have to work with vegetation. Why? Because in
the old times there wern’t that many cities, and people had a much closer
relation with nature.
Accepted Japanese periods: [Learn something here if you
are ignorant]
Nara, Heian, Kamakura, Muromachi, Sengoku, Momoyama, Edo, early Meiji – the
reform ( ex. kenshin is in-between edo and meiji)
One of these elements MUST be featured in your
wall:
Plants, Trees, Bushes, Mountains, Leaves, Grass, green stuff!
The “green” element does not have to be the main focus of the wall,
there will be no restrictions on how much space it has to take.
Doujinshis are accepted, as long as they are incorporated into a wallpaper.
Technique:
Important use of the smudge, paintbrush & airbrush tools in Adobe Photoshop,
or use of pro paint programs like PSP, OpenCanvas or Corel painter. Using the clone tool or painty filters only is cheatingg! You will be
scolded
You decide what and how much you paint in your wall. You do not need to paint
everything from scratch. Stock are accepted if painted over, same with vectors
and 3D renders (allthough I doubt you will want to use a 3D render for a feudal
wall D: )
Style:
Up to you. It doesn’t have to be scenic. You also choose how “paint-y”
you want your wall to look. Allthough keep in mind you’ll be juged on that.

NOT accepted types of scans
catgirls in miko outfits, altered costumes like naruto, bleach, inu-yasha, girls
going to a summer festival and modern kimonos. Lolita kimonos, sexy ninjas and
the sort.
Too supernatural is a no-go. A little bit of magic is fine because it fits the
historical legends, but nothing too flashy. Some examples of ambiguous you

the Aftermath:
When the contest is finished and all the entries are handed over, I would like
for you to go back to your wallpaper psd, and make us a little walk-through of
the techniques you used on your vegetation elements. The walk-through can be a
fully lenghted tutorial (e.g. How to paint trees with PS) or just screenshots
and explanations on how you worked (on the whole wall or the painted part, you
pick). Everything will be added to the group’s page as future reference.
This is to encourage members to share techniques and tutorials on digital
painting. Because we never stop learning, and because I think no one is really
that comfortable with painting in this
group. Great way to learn and help!

might want to take screenshots
All entries must be submitted to
MiniTokyo and posted in the paint-o-rama’s guestbook before December Twentieth. This gives you a little bit
more than a month. Shortly explain how and where you used painting techniques in
your wallpaper description. You need to be a group member to participate.
